Premium Rush 4.JPG

Last week before Christmas and only two more weeks of Blu-ray releases in 2012.  This week is filled with late summer and early fall new releases including the third film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Clint Eastwood’s baseball flick, a girly singing comedy, an unnecessary sci-fi remake, wimpy kid diary, and another frighteningly bad (yet fun) zombie crapfest.  On the catalog release front things are bit slower, but if you know someone that’s a fan of karate fighting turtles, classic ghost ships, or space age teen adventures you might be able to find a last minute Christmas gift.

Nick’s Blu-ray Pick of the Week: Premium Rush is a film filled with simple pleasures.  A charming cast, an exciting locale, and a satisfyingly simple plot make it a fun yet unremarkable way to spend ninety-one minutes.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been a little bit of everything this year with this and Looper being his two biggest starring roles.  Resident nut job Michael Shannon delivers the most inspired and amusingly unhinged performance of 2o12.  Jurassic Park writer David Koepp knew from the start what kind of movie he was co-writing and directing and delivered the goods as Premium Rush easily exceeds the sum of its parts.

Theatrical Review(s): Premium Rush, Total Recall

Throw Your Money Away Instead of Buying… Total Recall.  The word “uninspired” comes to mind when you talk about this summer’s remake of the 1990 Schwarzenegger classic Total Recall.  Some of the visuals are good, but most of the casting falls flat and in the end the movie just isn’t very much fun.  It’s far from the worst remake you’ll ever see, but that hardly means it’s worth watching.

If you want to be entertained go buy the original Total Recall.
