Netflix has added several new releases to its Streaming stable; some are misguided and rather disappointing action flicks but a couple of the smaller films are worth checking out. In regards to Netflix’s catalog lineup they’ve added some baseball themed films for the push towards the playoffs, several 70′s horror films, some 80′s teen action, a bizarre mix of 90′s classics, and some ‘thrilling’ B-movies. July isn’t a banner month for new additions but it’s a step in the right direction.
Conan the Barbarian (2011)- I didn’t think much of this remake (my review HERE) and judging by its box office performance most people didn’t think much it either. Perhaps it will find more life via streaming.
Immortals- In a neck and neck battle between Immortals and the aforementioned Conan remake I don’t know which movie was more disappointing. All I do know is this film had the potential to be an amazingly fun B-movie and turned out to be tremendously tedious with not nearly enough action or goddess nudity.
The Devil’s Double- A deeply flawed film that is horrifically violent details the story of Uday Hussein’s body double Latif Yahia. Dominic Cooper plays duel roles and gives a brilliant performance that the overall film can’t match.
Goon- Sean William Scott plays a dimwitted (shocking) guy who becomes an ‘enforcer’ for a minor league hockey team.
Rampart- Woody Harrelson’s Training Day?
America’s Pastime – The MLB All-Star Break just ended so there’s still plenty of baseball to be watched but if there’s a rain delay you can still get you baseball fix.
Exorcist II: The Heretic- Some would say the thought of watching the Exorcist II is more terrifying than the actual film.
I Spit on Your Grave- I’ve never actually heard anyone say they like I Spit on Your Grave. I can only assume that’s because most people don’t want people their friends and family to assume they’re a hillbilly rapist. The 2010 remake is also available.
Don’t Look Now- A lesser known horror film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie about a couple that are grieving the loss of their young daughter. At the time of its release it was quite controversial because of the ‘graphic’ sex scene.
80s Teen Military Action
Red Dawn- We’re only a few months away from the long delayed remakes release date so is there a better time to reacquaint yourself with the original John C. Milius classic? Red Dawn not only has an amazing cast with an intriguing ‘only in the Reagan-era’ mentality but it was also the first film to be released with a PG-13 rating.
TAPS- One of Tom Cruise’s earliest roles dating back to 1981. A group of cadets take control of their closing military academy to force a standoff to keep it open. The film stars Timothy Hutton, Sean Penn, and George C. Scott.
12 Monkeys- In a post-apocalypic world Bruce Willis is sent back in time to try and stop the event that almost wipes out humanity. This film is probably Terry Gilliam’s most commercially successful film and the one that helped put Brad Pitt on the map.
Boyz N the Hood- If anyone watches this while drinking a “40″ please give a shout out to their “homies” and please send me a photo so I can post it up.
Donnie Brasco- I still hold this as one of Johnny Depp’s better films. It’s too bad that Depp is more interested in making crappy Pirate of the Caribbeans sequels or junk like Dark Shadows because when he wants to he can deliver an arresting film (pun only somewhat intended).
So Bad, They’re Good
Galaxy of Terror- The very definition of B-Movie cult classic. James Cameron served as the Production Designer and Second Unit Director before heading off to much bigger and better things. The film is best remembered for it very strange and very graphic worm rape scene.
Big Bad Mama- Simply amazing! This movie has everything: William Shatner has southern accent and a nudity filled love scene, Jerry Garcia plays the banjo for the soundtrack, and Big Bad Mama has two horny teenage daughters… one of which is retarded and they both have sex with Tom Skerritt at the same time. It’s essentially a poor man’s Bonnie & Clyde with Shatner and a horny retard.
TNT Jackson- Its runtime is only 1 hour and 9 minutes but this is the only film I’ve ever seen that has a nude black woman in a “Benny Hill” style karate fight where everyone is either trying to turn on or off a ceiling lamp. There’s also a really confusing love scene where you quickly become confused on whose making love to who because of a bad case of ‘Afro’ confusion… afterwards they share a huge joint… otherwise the film is completely devoid of any racial stereotyping black, asian, or otherwise.
