 New to Blu-ray December 6, 2011

Now that all the Black Friday & Cyber Monday deals are gone it’s time for things to get back to normal as the final push towards Christmas gets underway.  This week marks the release of one of this summer’s biggest films, an under preforming genre mash-up, a surprise hit, and another career misstep by Jim Carrey.  Also being released this week are several catalog titles including a set time perfectly to coincide with the big screen return of Ethan Hunt and his M:I team and more.

New Releases

The Hangover Part II- Definitely not as good as the first but I still thought it was entertaining.  It tried too hard to outdo its predecessor.  Read my full review HERE.

Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy)
  • Conversations with Jon Favreau
  • Igniting the Sky: The Making of Cowboys & Aliens
  • Feature Commentary with Director Jon Favreau
The Help- I have zero interest in seeing this film even though my mother says it’s great (part of the problem?). Special Features include deleted scenes, Mary J. Blige The Living Proof music video, Making Of The Help: From Friendship To Film, In Their Own Words: A Tribute To The Maids Of Mississippi, and more

Mr. Popper’s Penguins (Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy) – Not that anyone cares about this piece of shit but special features include:

  • Nimrod and Stinky’s Antarctic Adventure
  • Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director Mark Waters, Editor Bruce Green and Visual Effects Supervisor Richard Hollander
  • Gag Reel
  • The Legacy of Mr. Popper’s Penguins
  • Ready for their Closeup
  • Ladies and Gentoomen
  • Stuffy Penguin Theater
  • Penguin Pandemonium with commentary by Director Mark Waters, Editor Bruce Green and Visual Effects Supervisor Richard Hollander
  • Audio Commentary with Director Mark Waters, Editor Bruce Green and Visual Effects Supervisor Richard Hollander
  • Original Story Sampler
  • Theatrical Trailer

The Debt- An interesting but ultimately imperfect spy film that started off great but fizzled out near the end.  Read my full review HERE.  Special features include:

  • A Look Inside The Debt featurette
  • Every Secret Has A Price: Helen Mirren In The Debt featurette
  • The Berlin Affair: The Triangle At The Center Of The Debt featurette
  • Commentary With Director John Madden And Producer Kris Thykier
Catalog Releases
Mission Impossible Giftset Collection- Includes all three Mission: Impossible films but don’t get too excited these are the exact same Blu-ray releases that have been around since 2008.  There are no new transfers or updated lossless soundtracks, it’s just a repackaged to coincide with the release of Mission: Impossible III Ghost Protocol.
The Simpsons: The Fourteenth Season- Unfortunately the show even was on life support even 10 years ago and continues to go down hill but if you’re still a fan the usual top notch extra come with this set including commentaries on all episodes, assorted featurettes, and even bonus Treehouse of Horror episodes.
Tora! Tora! Tora!- The classic 1970 World War II film comes to Blu-ray in a nice collectible booklet and fully restored including the following special features:
  • Commentary by Director Richard Fleischer & Japanese Film Historian Stuart Galbraith IV
  • Day of Infamy Documentary
  • History vs. Hollywood – TORA! TORA! TORA!: A Giant Awakes
  • AMC Backstory®: TORA! TORA! TORA!

  • Production Gallery
  • FOX Movietone News
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
The Lady Vanishes- From the folks at Criterion comes one of Hitchcock’s most sought after films that has been meticulously restored both in terms of video and audio and hosts a wonderful assortment of special features:
  • Crook’s Tour, a 1941 feature-length adventure film
  • Audio commentary by film historian Bruce Eder
  • Excerpts from Francois Truffaut’s 1962 audio interview with Alfred Hitchcock
  • Mystery Train, a video essay about Hitchcock and The Lady Vanishes
  • Stills gallery of behind-the-scenes photos and promotional art
  • A booklet featuring essays by Geoffrey O’Brien and Charles Barr
Dragon Tattoo Trilogy Extended Edition- This boxset restores over two total hours of footage back into the original trilogy just in time for the release of David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on December 21st.  Also included with the release is the 53-minute-long Millennium: The Story documentary about author Stieg Larsson’s life.
