New to Blu-ray December 13, 2011

December 13th marks one of best weeks for Blu-rays we’ve seen in quite a while.  This week you can add one of this summer’s most successful & critically acclaimed films, a very decent remake of an 80′s classic, and several great catalog titles to your collection including one of the most highly sought after films of the 90s.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes- One of my favorite films of this year, full review HERE.  Includes DVD & Digital Copy in addition to the following special features:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Mythology of the Apes
  • The Genius of Andy Serkis
  • A New Generation of Apes
  • Scene Breakdown
  • Character Concept Art Gallery
  • Breaking Motion Capture Boundaries
  • Composing the Score with Patrick Doyle
  • The Great Apes
  • Audio Commentary by Director Rupert Wyatt
  • Audio Commentary by Writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver
  • Theatrical Trailers

Fright Night- For once a worth while remake, full review HERE. There will two separate releases, one in 2D and one in 3D. Both sets include identical extras including a Gag Reel, Kid Cudi Music Video (uncensored version) – No One Believes Me, Squid Man – Extended & Uncut, Peter Vincent: Swim Inside My Mind featurette, The Official How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie Guide featurette, Frightful Facts & Terrifying Trivia, and 5 Deleted Scenes with intros by Director Craig Gillepsie.

Kung Fu Panda 2- Honestly there are worse kids movies out there but it’s still pretty miserable.  Full review HERE.

The Rocketeer- No special features but the film has been completely restored and is available for the first time  on disc since it’s original non-anamorphic DVD release in 1999.

  • Featurette on Stallone and his directing career
  • Inferno, a feature-length behind-the-scenes documentary
  • The Spike TV program, Action: The Expendables
  • Music video from Sully Erna of Godsmack

City of God- The only special feature is the hour long documentary News from a Personal War about the terrible drug and gun trade that has ravished Rio de Janeiro.

Velvet Goldmine- Special features include audio commentary by director Todd Haynes and producer Christine Vachon.

Intruder Director’s Cut- Fully restored transfer and includes a commentary track with the writer/director Scott Spiegel, assorted featurettes, outtakes, theatrical trailer, and more.
